Brainiacs STEM and Robotics is an education technology service provider in STEM that works with learners across age groups. Brainiacs Creativity package is designed specifically for young learners in Primary and Secondary School to provide the skills and motivation for successful career in the 21st century workplace.
In its efforts towards democratizing STEM education across Nigeria, Brainiacs STEM & Robotics collaborated with WAAW Foundation Abuja to provide a 1-day free STEM awareness for students of SKAS Care Academy Hwolshe Jos, Plateau State. The session was designed to introduce the students to coding, robotics and how to apply them in solving real world problems. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experimental learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, leaders, and leaders of the 21st century.

The workshop adopted a practical work and, project based learning approach which entailed allowing the learners to work in groups to accomplish assigned tasks. Mr. Alexander Shimei of Brainiacs STEM & Robotics started with puzzles on Number Equivalent and Multiplication to break the ice and get the learners tuned in. He then progressed to introduce the basics of Robotics, its applications and the reasons robots are employed for different projects and repetitive tasks.
Learners were then divided into groups to work on their first ever robotics project. The project they worked on was the Milo Science Rover (using Lego Wedo 2.0) which entails building and programming a robot to explore for water while finding the presence of life in planet Mars. The project emphasized on the importance of teamwork and collaboration among participants to achieve the desired outcome for a quicker and better outcome.

WAAW foundation Abuja STEM Instructors Miss Lucy Ejiro and Mrs. Funmi Obayan introduced the students to Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy and Newton’s Third Law of Motion and its practical application on a balloon powered car. Local materials like cardboard sheet, balloon, empty pen, plastic cover and cello-tape were used to build the balloon powered car. Mr. Alex challenged the learners to devise a means of increasing the total distance covered by the car before the car stops by limiting the amount of air escaping from the balloon.
The learners were also introduced to the basic science developing renewable of energy resources. They used photo-voltaic (PV) cells to generate electricity from the sun. The students took turns in testing the amount of power generated by each solar panel to appreciate how PV cells are used to generate power. They went further to generate their first solar powered electric circuit using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). They all enjoyed the practical application of renewable energy technology and its potential in solving the energy challenge of our country.

The principal of the school, Mrs. Nadine, thanked the instructors for taking their time to teach their students and also explained that the school was for the less privileged and pleaded with the to continue visiting to keep encouraging the students. About 20 students and their teachers participated in the 1-day workshop.
